When I looked at the pictures that advanced
students Helen Jones and Elise Huston made for their
final project this past semester (a.k.a. The Shack Project),
it became clear that their photographic exploration
had been a slow and deliberate process.
Helen went to the first shack alone, about a year ago, but this summer it became a dual effort with
Elise. They discovered more and more shacks in the area, and their fascination with them grew.
Their work is beautiful and draws the viewer in to wonder about the history of these houses.
When asked about what compelled them to explore these modern ruins,
Elise and Helen talk about the antiquity of the sites. They find the
physical deterioration of the houses fascinating as well as the stories
behind them. They also commented that without In-Sight they might not
have been able to earn their own cameras nor would they have had the
encouragement to embark on long term endeavors, such as "The Shack
Project."
