This summer In-Sight will team up with The Hall Farm Center for Arts and Education in Townsend Vermont and The Point, a youth photography program based in the South Bronx, to journey to the SuAnne Big Crow Boy's and Girl's Club on the Pine Ridge Lakota Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Participants will travel to Pine Ridge in order to develop the photography program at the Boy's and Girl's Club there.
The trip is part of the Exposures program, a collaborative effort between In-Sight and Hall Farm designed to bring together culturally and geographically diverse communities through photography and photographic education. The program is intended to be both an exploration of the unique qualities of participating communities as well as a celebration of shared artistic experiences and connections between youth. Exposures' first exchange took place at Hall Farm in October 2001. Young photographers from the Point and In-Sight gathered together for a successful weekend - exchanging ideas and inspirations.
John Willis, co-founder of In-Sight and initiator of the connection between In-Sight and Pine Ridge, and In-Sight teacher Erin Barnard will travel to Pine Ridge this July along with participants from Hall Farm, In-Sight, The Point, and students from Marlboro College to spend two weeks on the reservation. This group will assist with the development of the photography program at the Boy's and Girl's Club and run photography classes for all the young photographers participating in the exchange. The curriculum will include self- portraits, family and community portraits, along with images of homes and safety zones, hopes, fears, and dreams. Photographers will also learn to use various techniques such as antique and alternative processes.
Erin is excited about this summer's programs and the potential for exchange between participants, "when the kids go out there, photography will be something they can share with each other [to] communicate to other people what they think is beautiful, what they think is funny, to say what they want to say, or even to show what they want."
In-Sight hopes to continue the Exposures program in the future with a gathering at Hall Farm of young photographers from In-Sight, The Point and the SuAnne Big Crow Boy's and Girl's Club photography program.
